More than £3m has been donated to charity in just over two hours in the first day of the Big Give’s match fund challenge.
The challenge, which began at 10am, offered individual donors the chance to have their donation matched after a select number of charities secured pledges from their trustees and major donors earlier in the year. These pledges will be cashed in to match public donations.
The £3m raised today is half the week's fundraising total.
Jon Brooks, managing director of the Big Give, told Civil Society Fundraising that the website was very pleased with the glitch-free start to the challenge. Brooks said that while the public donations target for the week is £6m, charities have raised enough pledges from their trustees, major donors and with Reed Foundation offers that the end total would easily top the original target.
While last year Big Give attracted controversy for stopping match fund money going to some Christian charities, this year the organisation invited select charities to participate in the challenge, said Brooks.
One hundred and seventy-five charities are taking part in the match fund. The site hopes to raise a further £1.5m tomorrow.
