NCVO giving campaign tells donors to research charities

Fundraising | Celina Ribeiro | 3 Dec 2009

A long-awaited national giving campaign is encouraging donors to research charities before donating even small amounts.

The NCVO has today announced the launch of a national giving campaign ‘What do you believe in’ nearly a year after they first told media they had begun the groundwork for the effort this January. The campaign designed initially to combat a drop in individual giving as a result of the recession.

Encouraging donors to research how their money is spent is one of the top messages of the campaign, given equal weighting to claiming gift aid.

Donors are also encouraged to search for charities on the Big Give and Charities Aid Foundation websites (both of which are also backing the campaign) and to consider local as well as more far-reaching causes.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown is joined by a range of umbrella bodies in backing the campaign, which was part of the NCVO’s memorandum of understanding with the Office of the Third Sector. In September NCVO had told Civil Society Fundraising that in the lead up to the election, the campaign was not at the top of its agenda.

Stuart Etherington, chief executive of the NCVO, said “I’m asking ‘what do you believe in?’ to remind people of the work that still needs to be done to achieve the ‘good society’ and of the contribution they personally can make simply by giving to causes they believe in. Everyone from regular donors, to those who have stopped and those who have never given before can help.”
