Christmas appeal round-up

Fundraising | Celina Ribeiro | 27 Nov 2009

Charities are using their online presence and corporate partnerships to boost their fundraising income this Christmas.

International medical charity Merlin has embarked on its first ever integrated online-direct mail campaign this year, using emotive direct mail style imagery, asks and text on its home page. The charity aims to raise £30,000 in the appeal, which focuses on training 120 community  health workers in Zimbabwe.

The charity has sent direct mail packs to 30,000 warm supporters with a £50 ask. The same ask is repeated on both its website home page and special appeal web page. The campaign will be also promoted via social media.

Meanwhile, Cancer Research UK is hoping to bring in £80,000 via a Christmas partnership with e-card website Purple Hoot.

The website will donate £1 from every £3.99 ‘unlimited use’ product sold in the Christmas season.

Also, Abbey is stepping its fundraising for charity partner Help the Hospices up a gear in the Christmas season. The bank has pledged to raise £100,000 for the charity over 2009. During Christmas, staff will support the organisation in a Santa Run and by selling ‘reindeer food’ at all branches, for a suggested donation of £1 per pack.

Dorset charity the Weldmar Hospicecare Trust will be engaging its supporters this Christmas via five Christmas trees. Supporters, and friends and family of those who have used the trust’s services, are asked to make a minimum £5 donation to sponsor a single light on the Christmas trees in memory of their loved one.

The charity will create events around the lighting of the trees throughout December.
