Equality and Human Rights Commission grants heavily oversubscribed

Fundraising | Celina Ribeiro | 26 Nov 2009

Nearly £10m in grants has been awarded by the Equality and Human Rights Commission as part of a funding programme that was 50-times over-subscribed.

Sixty-one projects have been granted funding from the Commission, which yesterday revealed that more than 2,000 organisations had applied for funding.

The £10m in grants announced yesterday is on top of £4.2m distributed among 77 civil society organisations earlier in November in legal grants funding. A further £1m is available in grants to smaller-scale organisations in the next financial year.

This latest round of grants focussed on two areas of priority: the provision of advice and support for individuals who would otherwise find it difficult to access life-improving and rights-based services; and projects which improve good relations between communities, both fighting prejudice and improving interaction.

Grants ranged in value from less than £40,000 to more than £393,000 (which went to a Derbyshire project providing support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in the region).

Baroness Margaret Prosser (pictured), deputy chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, said that the grants went to projects that had good understanding of how to provide benefit in their local communities. "The Commission’s strategic funding programme will help 138 organisations that make a real difference to hundreds of thousands of people. They have both the knowledge and expertise to bring real benefits to their local communities,” she said.

“Through our unique grants programme we can help ensure this good work continues. Support for these organisations is critical if we are to succeed in extending equality and fairness to all people in Britain."
