The British Heart Foundation’s calendar designed specifically for use on the desks of funeral directors has been awarded the title of Professional Fundraising's Charity Calendar of the Year.
The desk calendar, which is used to promote in-memoriam giving within funeral homes, won the judges’ approval in a tight vote based on its unique proposition, design and promotion of its cause. BHF's in-memoriam calendar is the first to be awarded the PF Charity Calendar of the Year title.
Judges agreed that the BHF calendar - which promoted in-memoriam giving on both sides of the pages so that both the funeral directors and deceased's loved ones could see the message that donations are more valuable than flowers - was exceptionally innovative in the way it targeted a highly specific audience.
The calendar's design was well-suited to its environment and BHF also repeatedly expressed its impact throughout the calendar, with notes such as "The BHF's work will have helped almost every one of the 2.5 million heart patients in the UK".
BHF was selected from over 60 entries from charities ranging from Bulldog Rescue to children's hospices and sheltered housing. The entries were scored on design, originality, representation of the cause and promotion of fundraising.
Andrew Grant, in-memoriam and gift of hope coordinator at BHF, told Professional Fundraising that the calendar had first been used in 2008, but dropped in 2009 due to budget restrictions. Such was the demand for the calendar from funeral directors, however, the charity was forced to re-introduce it for 2010.
Meanwhile, Ataxia UK has won 500 calendars in the Professional Fundraising–Picture Giving competition to find the charity with the best calendar idea. Ataxia UK and the British Red Cross are informed today of their win.
Although the Calendar of the Year competition did not initially intend to award highly-commended honours, the quality and quantity of entries forced judges to nominate a list of several high-performing calendars, both overall and in special categories.
The full list of winners are as follows:
British Heart Foundation’s calendar that goes out to funeral directors to encourage in-memoriam giving
Ataxia UK
Down’s Syndrome Scotland
Kidney Research UK
World Emergency Relief
Galapagos Conservation Trust
Barnardo’s
Action Breast Cancer (Irish Cancer Society)
Severn Hospice
Blue Cross e-calendar
The judges also commended the build-your-own calendar entry by Vision Africa for having exceptional images.
