People with unwanted or underused cars are being encouraged to donate them to charity, following the launch of a new website this week.
GiveACar.co.uk is a start-up not-for-profit website launched this week by 22-year old Tom Chance. The website hopes to tap a new source of income for charities by having people donate cars either due for sale or the scrapyard to the site, which will then collect and auction off the car and donate the proceeds to a charity of the former car-owner’s choice or one of the four charities signed up to the site.
Chance said he came up with the idea for the site after working at a car yard and noticing people looking to offload their cars quickly, sometimes with scant care for how much money they received in return.
While the website does have four charities already signed up as preferred charity partners, Chance said that other charities may apply to become partner charities although the site prefers to keep its partner numbers low.
The website and its associated volunteers cover the cost of moving the cars and insurance, but auction house fees are taken out from the overall donation.
