Charity chiefs back gift aid campaign

Fundraising | 25 Sep 2009

A number of charity chief executives and fundraising directors have signed the Institute of Fundraising’s online petition to press the government into adopting changes to gift aid, but the petition is still 100 signatories short of the number needed to elicit a response from government.

The Institute wants the government to allow charities to reclaim the gift aid that higher-rate taxpayers are able to reclaim for themselves but often don’t.

The petition has attracted support from the chief executives of RNIB, NSPCC, WWF-UK, Save the Children, British Red Cross and the fundraising director at Barnardo’s.

The petition has gained nearly 400 signatures within a week. It requires 500 signatories to elicit a response from government and the IoF's head of campaigns, Louise Richards, is confident of reaching that within a few days.

The Institute is still working with other sector umbrella bodies to lobby for gift aid to be converted from an opt-in scheme to an opt-out one.
