Facebook is to launch a charity gift scheme, according to an announcement at a US conference.
Randi Zuckerberg (pictured), Facebook's director of development, told the Social Good conference in New York on Friday that the social network is planning to expand its gift shop to include a facility for users to send virtual charity gifts to their friends.
The trial will be carried out by four US charities – (RED), Toms, Kiva and WWF – which will offer one or two gifts each, valued at $5 or $10. Users will purchase the gifts, send them to friends and the money will be directed toward the charity involved.
The announcement comes two weeks after Facebook revealed it would allow developers access to its virtual gift shop, thus enabling them to create new applications within the shop.
