International development charity VSO has invited Mark Astarita, director of fundraising at the British Red Cross, to become a trustee on its international board.
It will be Astarita’s second trustee appointment this year. Last month, he was co-opted onto the Institute of Fundraising’s board for his membership and marketing experience.
“It’s a nice coincidence that the two offers came along around the same time,” he said, “I’ve always admired VSO and I’m delighted that I can make some small contribution to it.”
Astarita will be joined by Labour MP Hilary Armstrong, another new addition to VSO’s board. She volunteered in Kenya with the charity in 1966.
A new chair will also lead VSO’s 14 international trustees. Sir Suma Chakrabarti, permanent secretary at the Ministry of Justice and a former permanent secretary for the Department for International Development, replaces Dr Keith Bezanson, who stepped down due to ill health.
A VSO spokeswoman said each new board member had relevant experience and knowledge, along with a personal interest in international development.
The new trustees will oversee VSO as it consolidates its international federation structure and strengthens its national volunteering work, as well as increasing its commitment to diversify international volunteering.
