New Philanthropy Capital spreads its research wings to India

New Philanthropy Capital spreads its research wings to India New Philanthropy Capital (NPC) is to expand its charity effectiveness research to India, in a bid to stimulate more giving by UK donors to poor countries.

The donor-advisory charity has entered into a joint agreement with Copal Partners, an Indian-based research outfit that usually provides research for investment banks and other private sector companies. Copal will commit six staff to the partnership and NPC will deploy one full-time analyst in India.

NPC has already conducted research into overseas philanthropy by UK donors as part of a broader project to look at whether it should expand its work to cover charities operating overseas. It has published a report of its findings that it claims illustrates the need for its pilot in India.

Philanthropists without borders claims that donors would like to give more money to developing world projects but are put off by a number of factors, including a lack of information about the effectiveness of the charities working there.

Some 122 UK donors were interviewed for the report, 85 of whom said they would welcome independent, in-depth analysis of charities in developing countries. The new Copal partnership will allow donors to make informed donations that will generate strong social returns, said NPC’s research director Martin Brookes.

In its research for Philanthropists without borders, NPC found that philanthropy already accounts for 16 per cent of civil society income in developing countries, and that 13 per cent of all UK donations go to international causes.

The causes donors most wanted to support in the developing world were education and economic empowerment, and the region they choose to donate to most was sub-Saharan Africa.
