Justgiving joins Facebook revolution

Fundraising | Becky Slack | 1 Sep 2007

Over 4,400 people have joined an application set up by Justgiving on the social networking site Facebook since its launch at the end of July.

The new application allows Facebook users with Justgiving accounts to add a button to their profile page on the site showing progress towards their fundraising target. It also allows those that have donated to join and show their support.

The application has already had over 20,000 visits from Facebook with 2,000 donating to a friend after seeing it. Justgiving said that 100 people a day are adding the application to their Facebook profile.

Justgiving has estimated that 10-15 per cent of its users have a Facebook account. Before the application launched the networking site already contained more than 500 Justgiving groups and many charities, including the Royal British Legion and St John Ambulance, have created their own Facebook groups in an attempt to a raise awareness and drive fundraising through the site.

Due to user demand Justgiving is working to update the new application to let users ‘invite’ their friends to donate directly to their fundraising page, and is also developing a second Facebook application.

Matthew Knights, technical architect at Justgiving, said: “We want to help our users raise as much as they possibly can. It’s a perfect fit for Facebook users who are doing a traditional sponsored event or have created their own appeal. I think anyone would be hard pushed to find an easier way to engage their friends and contacts more quickly.”

Facebook’s audience has increased by 500 per cent in the last six months and the latest figures show it had 3.2 million unique visitors in the UK in May 2007. Meanwhile, Justgiving has helped more than 3 million people collect over £150m since it was launched in 2001.
