Thompson to chair National Convention

Russell Thompson, director of national events and fundraising at the Royal British Legion, will take over as chair of the Institute of Fundraising's Convention Board in 2009.

He will replace Gill Raikes, director of fundraising at the National Trust, who will step down next year after three years in the post.

The Convention board reports to the Institute and members are selected for their contribution to the sector, knowledge and expertise.

Thompson has worked at the Legion for ten years, having spent five years as head of fundraising in the UK and Ireland for the British Red Cross and 18 years working in a variety of fundraising roles at Oxfam. He was awarded an OBE in this year's New Years Honours list.

Thompson said he was 'honoured' to take on the role. "The National Convention has been key to my own personal development over the years and I hope that I can make a significant contribution to encourage the future generation of fundraisers."
