Christmas came early for some charity shops with shoppers rushing to snap up bargains in early December. The British Red Cross achieved it best ever charity shop sales in the first week of December, raising £542,000, thanks to increased investment in its 351 charity shops, including improved performance management and the introduction of a shop league table.
But a Manchester charity had to shut its doors after a rush for its party dresses nearly caused a crush. The St Ann's Hospice in Walkden had set up a temporary outlet during the run up to Christmas to sell its glitz and glamour collection, but were overwhelmed by the crowds. "Luckily we had been collecting stock all year so could cope with the demand," said the shop manager Pam Senior.
