A wide range of charities were supported by Christmas appeals in the UK's national newspapers. The Independent's appeal focused on international aid, collecting for Merlin, The Welfare Association and Anti-Slavery International, as did The Times, which chose the British Red Cross. The Guardian worked in partnership with New Philanthropy Capital to support a group of eight UK mental health charities, as well as collecting for Practical Action. The Daily Mail's appeal focused solely on Mencap, while The Daily Telegraph supported SSAFA Forces Help, The MicroLean Foundation in Malawi, and the Chailey Heritage School for disabled children. An online Make A Sick Kid Smile appeal for Wallace& Gromit's Children's Foundation was organised by The Sun.
