The Disasters Emergency Committee has postponed until December the outcome of a long-awaited strategic review on whether it should take on a campaigning role as well as a fundraising remit.
The findings of the review, which is being undertaken by the DEC's chief executive Brendan Gormley and its chairman Mike Walsh, were scheduled to be presented to trustees at the organisation's September board meeting but will now be delayed until the December meeting.
A spokesman cited "a number of complicated projects" for the postponement, including the Asia Quake appeal, which took up a lot of the organisation's time in the first part of this year.
The strategic review will have to be endorsed by the board of trustees, which includes the chief executives of all the DEC's member charities. However, earlier this year a number of trustees spoke out against the extension of the DEC's remit to cover campaigning, arguing that the organisation should remain focused on fundraising and getting closer to its donors.
Last week, on the anniversary of the earthquake that hit Pakistan and India last October, the DEC said 'thank you' to its donors for raising £60m for the Asia Quake appeal. Over £40m was donated directly to the DEC, with a further £20m raised by individual member agencies.
