Scottish ME Foundation put under orders

The Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator has been granted interim orders against the ME Foundation because of suspicions over a lack of charitable expenditure.

"Our monitoring procedures identified an apparent lack of charitable expenditure over the life of this charity, and significant private benefit derived by the charity trustees and their associated family," said Kirsty Gray, head of monitoring and investigation at the OSCR.

In information lodged with the register of Scottish charities, the Edinburgh-based charity declared its gross annual income as £253,000 in 2005 and states it helps children and the disabled.

The ME Foundation has 21 days to lodge answers to the orders, granted by the Court of Session on 4 October, or the charity's trustees will be suspended. Maureen Leslie of Active Corporate Assets has been appointed as judicial factor in the case and will be in charge of managing the charity's financial affairs if full orders are granted.
