Personal philanthropy is generating larger-thanever amounts of funds for charity in The Netherlands, according to research published by Factary, a non-profit research consultancy.
Gifts as large as £2.2m are being made by individuals, many of whom are setting up their own foundations as a means to distribute the funds rather than do so through an already established charity or not-for-profit organisations, which they claim do not respond to their needs.
The research highlighted that while the sector is getting wise to this level of philanthropy, it is not investing enough resources to take full advantage of it with serious shortages of skilled people, training and information hindering development of the market.
Chris Carnie, director of Factary, said: "In Holland there are skilled, successful, professional people doing major gift fundraising and doing it well. The problem is that there are so few of them - we estimate around six in the whole country. That's where nonprofits really need to concentrate their efforts - in building up teams of skilled people to develop this market."
