Wiggins inspires more people to take part in cycling fundraisers

Fundraising | Kirsty Weakley | 22 Feb 2013

Following the GB cycling team's success at the Olympics, the number of cycling fundraising events more than doubled last year.

Online fundraising site, JustGiving has reported that in 2011 there were 5,289 cycling events registered on its site, in 2012 this rose to 13,338. The amount of money raised through these totalled of £20.9m in 2012, which is a 45 per cent increase on the previous year’s total of £14.4m.

More than half of the 273 cycling fundraisers that JustGiving surveyed at the end of last year said that they were inspired by the success of Team GB’s cyclists at the 2012 Olympics with 86 per cent saying that Bradley Wiggins was the most inspiring.

Anne-Marie Huby, MD of JustGiving said: “It is fantastic to see how Bradley Wiggins and the rest of Team GB have managed to put cycling firmly back on the fundraising map.”

JustGiving has now launched a dedicated cycling hub to help people find a fundraising cycling event.
