Giving by credit and debit cards up by a fifth

Donations to charity via card have increased in the first part of 2009, following a record year in 2008.

The value of credit and debit card donations reached £1.19bn in 2008, increasing by 18 per cent on the previous year, according to the UK Cards Association.

The upward trend shows signs of continuing, according to the Association, which reports a 24 per cent increase in the value of debit card donations in the first four months of 2009 compared to the same period last year. Credit card giving also increased over the period by 11 per cent on 2008 levels.

While debit card giving growth outpaced that of credit cards, the latter still accounted for more donations; in 2008 £639.2m was donated on credit cards compared to £546.9m on debit cards.

A spokesperson for the association, predicted that debit cards would account for more giving in coming years. “We would expect the gap to narrow in the future as charitable giving on plastic cards follows the overall trends in the market towards debit cards,” they said.
