GoldenBuy: 12 charities to share £1.6m Bond auction proceeds

Fundraising | Niki May Young | 11 Oct 2012

A Christie's auction celebrating the 50th anniversary of James Bond on film has raised almost £1.6m for Unicef and 11 other charities, after selling out and trippling expected sales.

A live evening auction was held on 5 October and an online auction ran from 28 September to 8 October. The online auction, selling 42 items including props, jewellery and costumes, raised £889,300. The live event, which featured guest auctioneers including Sir Roger Moore, Dame Judy Dench and David Walliams and saw 11 items sold, raised £752,050.

The top lot of both auctions, purchased at the live event, was an Aston Martin DBS driven by Daniel Craig in the Quantum of Solace, which raised £241,250 and was bought by an anonymous telephone bidder. An iconic pair of trunks worn by Craig as he emerged from the sea in Casino Royale raised £44,450, after an estimate price of £3,000 - £5,000 was set.Daniel Craig in his iconic trunks

The majority of lots, which relate to each of the were donated by Eon Productions, the company producing the James Bond series, which selected Unicef as the charity to benefit. Other lots were provided by cast and supporters who chose which charities they wished the proceeds to go to. Other charities include Barnardo', the National Youth Theatre, Parkinson's UK and Childline.

The total amount to be donated to the charities will be ascertained once Christie's costs of running the events are deducted from the £1.6m total. Christie's waved its fees for the auction.
