London-Paris cycle ride raises £100,000

A team of forty cyclists has raised £100,000 for Transaid in a three-day cycle from London to Paris.

The ride, which ended in Paris yesterday, comprised cyclists from a range of transport-related companies. It is the first time since Transaid, the transport industry’s international development charity, began doing cycle challenges in 2006 that the challenge has been held in Europe, but the charity said it intends to consider more cycle events closer to home in future as a result.

The ride included Transport for London Commissioner Peter Hendy who took 13 TfL staff on the event, and mended his own punctures along the way.

Gary Forster, Transaid chief executive, said that the range of participants was a draw. “There was a broad mix of participants from across the transport industry, including representatives from some of the largest logistics and passenger transport companies in Europe. We’re very lucky to have such support and grateful that the challengers found the time to leave their busy day jobs,” he said.

The next annual bike ride will be held in Uganda.
