BIG opens £10m fund for sustainable communities

Fundraising | Celina Ribeiro | 29 Nov 2011

The Big Lottery Fund has launched a £10m fund for community partnerships that work towards financial, environmental and health sustainability in England.

The lottery funder has today announced that the Communities Living Sustainably programme will fund community-based projects in ten English communities which aim to encourage people to adapt their lifestyles in order to get financial, environmental or health-based benefits.

BIG is inviting pitches for initiatives which address food and fuel poverty, encourage the use of alternative energy, the growing of food locally and the reduction of waste, among other similar issues.

Around 30 of the best partnership applications will receive up to £10,000 to develop their proposals, and of those the ten top proposals will receive up to £1m to roll out the programme for up to five years.

Dharmendra Kanani, director of the Big Lottery Fund England, said: “We want to spark the imagination of local communities to make greener choices and most importantly help vulnerable people to reduce their costs and improve their quality of life.

“This £10m investment aims to jump-start a change in the behaviour of individuals and communities to think and act differently in their daily lives so that sustainable living becomes second nature.”

The deadline for expressions of interest in the programme is midday 31 January, 2012.
