Blue Cross undergoes restructure, reshuffles management

Fundraising | Celina Ribeiro | 5 Aug 2009

Senior management at pet charity the Blue Cross is being shaken up as it embarks on a wide-ranging structural review.

A number of senior positions will no longer exist and new ones will be created as part of the full organisational review which has been launched following the appointment of Kim Hamilton as chief executive last year.

Changes to management, due to come into effect in January 2010, will see current companion animal welfare director Steve Goody take up the role of director of external relations and Neil Smith expand his remit from director of finance to director of finance and resources.

Laura Dobson, a spokeswoman for the Blue Cross, told Charity News Alert that the charity had seen an increase in demand for its re-homing and veterinary services in the recession, but that this was not a "primary reason" for the review.

"The key purpose of the review is to make sure we understand what the animal welfare need is out there and to make sure that in the 21st century we’re structured to be able to provide for that need," she said.

Income steady, but redundancies not ruled out

Dobson also dismissed the suggestion that the review may be in response to a fall in voluntary income levels.

“We haven’t seen a huge drop-off in income or a reduction at all in income as yet – obviously we don’t know what future years may bring. At the moment we haven’t seen any reduction in our legacy income or income from regular givers," she said.

The possibility of redundancies has not been ruled out. "It's too early to say if there will be any redundancies, as we don't yet know what the final structure will look like. But we do need to make sure we are operating efficiently so we can help as many needy animals as possible, especially in this current climate when demand for our work is greater than ever," said Dobson.
