An American campaign to “raise an unprecedented amount of money” for charities via social media has got off to a sluggish start.
The Summer of Social Good, which aims to raise money for four charities – Oxfam, Humane Society, LiveSTRONG and WWF – exclusively via social networking and the internet over the summer has raised less than $5,000 three weeks after launch.
The campaign will run from 1 June to 28 August. It asks supporters to donate to the four charities via GlobalGiving.com and encourage their social networks to do the same by posting widgets and links onto their profiles and updates.
While it uses all the most popular social network mediums including Facebook, MySpace and blogs, the campaign appears to be concentrating on the power of Twitter, encouraging donors and supporters to ‘tweet’ immediately after making a donation to the campaign.
Summer of Social Good, which was in development from January this year and claims to be the “first large scale online charitable campaign to raise funds through the power of social media and the internet”, had aimed to raise “unprecedented” amounts of money, but appears to be falling short of its vague target.
The ‘Summer’ will culminate in a Social Good Conference in New York to celebrate the achievements of the campaign.
