Scottish giving levels drop

Fundraising | Celina Ribeiro | 9 Jul 2009

Scottish giving levels have dropped by more than 10 per cent over the past year, according to a new survey.

In April this year, 71 per cent of Scots reported having made a donation to charity in the last six months according to the Scottish Charity Engagement Monitor, released today by nfpSynergy. The figure was down from 79 per cent in April 2008.

Middle-aged donors demonstrated the largest fall in philanthropy – dropping from 80 per cent having given in the six months leading to April 2008 compared to just 64 per cent over the same period in 2009.

Meanwhile, younger donors have shown greater resilience, falling from 75 per cent in 2008 to 74 per cent in 2009.

Jonathan Baker, nfpSynergy researcher, said that the middle aged showed particular “anxiety”.
