NCVO recession giving campaign stalled

Fundraising | Celina Ribeiro | 7 Jul 2009

The giving campaign mooted by NCVO back in January has been delayed as a result of staff changes at the umbrella organisation.

Ann Blackmore (pictured), who took up the position of head of campaigns and communications in June, told Charity News Alert that progress has been delayed due to a change of staff, and that she hopes a campaign will be up and running later in the summer.

In January Blackmore’s predecessor Louis High said that the organisation was working on a campaign, potentially using celebrities, to encourage people to give small amounts of money or time to charities. High revealed that NCVO was planning such a campaign following a blog on Professional Fundraising which called for a recession-focused ‘don’t stop giving’ campaign.

At the time, High said the campaign had been in planning and research for four or five months and that testing had been conducted over the Christmas period. Later on in the year, another NCVO spokesman told PF that the campaign would launch in June or July.

High left the organisation in April and is currently travelling and doing volunteer work in Angola.

Blackmore said that since coming into her new role at NCVO, she has had to review the progress that has been made on the campaign to date.

Back in January High said that his team had already begun talking to other umbrella bodies about running a co-ordinated campaign. Six months later, Blackmore is preparing to do the same.

“There had been preliminary discussions at the beginning of the year, so it was something that had been discussed with some of the leading umbrella bodies. There had been some outlines and proposals, but there hadn’t been an opportunity to work them up,” she said.

“We are really at such an early stage. It’s an idea that we’ve had and I want to talk to colleagues across the sector and see how they react and the best way to take it forward.”
