Breast cancer charities 'earn more by staying apart'

Fundraising | Tania Mason | 19 Jun 2009

Breast Cancer Campaign has rejected a call by New Philanthropy Capital for it to merge with Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

Last week, in a report titled What place for mergers between charities?, NPC said there was a "compelling case" for mergers in five sectors: literacy programmes in schools, breast cancer research, mental health helplines, debt advice and grant-making trusts.

It goes so far as to name Breast Cancer Campaign and Breakthrough Breast Cancer as potential merger partners.

But Pamela Goldberg (pictured), chief executive of Breast Cancer Campaign, said the two charities were of the opinion that joining together in a full-blown merger would result in less money for breast cancer research.

Goldberg said: “Breast Cancer Campaign regularly meets with Breakthrough Breast Cancer to discuss and collaborate on a number of issues – we can decide when and where it is better to work independently, and where we are greater than the sum of our parts by collaborating.

“Although we share the same aspiration to beat breast cancer now and in the future, we currently believe that there would be less money for breast cancer research… by merging.

“There is absolutely no evidence that a merger will produce significant savings: our individual evaluations indicate there is more potential to maximise fundraising opportunities across income streams such as corporate partnerships, individual donors and events by having two separate charities, rather than one.”
