NCVYS and National Citizen Service groups start e-campaigns for young people

The National Council For Voluntary Youth Services has launched an e-campaign through Twitter and Facebook calling for young people to send images showing those who were not involved in this week’s violence.

The campaign is being promoted on Twitter through hashtag #notinmyname, and images of young people holding a sign that reads ‘not in my name’ are being housed on a Facebook page.

A NCVYS spokeswoman said it hopes the images will circulate across social media and make a positive impact.

Meanwhile, charities tendered on National Citizen Service (NCS), the government’s youth volunteering programme, are also launching e-campaigns.

A group of young people from The Challenge Network, one of the charities running NCS programmes this summer, have set up a Facebook page called “We are part of the solution not the problem”, giving young people a place where they can share their views on the riot and talk about what they have been doing to support their communities.

An NCS spokesman said many of the young people taking part in National Citizen Service will be discussing what they can do to challenge people’s perception of young people as part of the social action projects they will all be developing.

Elsewhere, youth volunteeering charity v has today released a report which highlights the positive impacts of youth volunteering.

The study showed that 87 per cent of v’s projects improved attitudes towards young people in their communities, and 91 per cent of projects provided better links between young people and the wider community.
