Adam Rothwell is to leave Intelligent Giving to become a teacher of history at an independent secondary school in Rutland.
His post as director will be filled in the interim by Richard Marsh, until recently director of the ImpACT Coalition.
Rothwell explained that he had been toying with the idea of teaching for a while, and felt the time was now right to make a career change.
His leadership of Intelligent Giving (IG) has not been without controversy – several people within fundraising have reacted with anger to the organisation’s efforts to style itself as a sector watchdog.
IG’s recent ‘mystery shopping’ research into whether street fundraisers were abiding by the codes of practice set out by the Institute of Fundraising and the Charities Act generated huge criticism from those that use face-to-face. Rothwell has also had run-ins with Joe Saxton at nfpSynergy over whose research methods are more valid.
When Marsh joins in July for a two-week handover, he will take on various projects already instigated by Rothwell, including the new consultancy business whereby charities are charged a fee for IG to advise on how to improve their annual report and accounts, the work with Charity Navigator and Keystone Accountability to create a ‘Which-style’ guide to charities.
Marsh has just finished as director of the ImpACT Coalition following its move from the Institute of Fundraising to Acevo.
Rothwell was promoted to director of IG in May last year following the departure of Dave Pitchford. Rothwell had previously been features editor of the site.
