Fundraisers should be champions of their own profession

21 May 2013

It’s all well and good promoting the cause, but fundraisers need to do better at promoting their own profession, says Bruce Tait.

The FRSB is not a greyhound, but an unloved camel

Welcome, Alistair McLean, new chief executive of FRSB. I have been racking my brains to find common ground between greyhound racing and fundraising. Nothing comes to mind except profound and very personal gratitude that it is not the custom to take old, underperforming fundraisers round the back of the kennels and shoot us.

So, did anyone watch the One show?

On a programme that focused on Thursday Night Fever, with special guest Robin ‘Bee Gee’ Gibb (pictured), did Adam Rothwell’s comments get anyone hot under the collar? The director of Intelligent Giving was filmed for a segment on face-to-face fundraising, and I think his Words might create some Emotions (see what I did there?).

Face-to-face debate on the box tonight

The debate on the future of face-to-face fundraising will continue tonight on that great bastion of british broadcasting, the BBC, as Intelligent Giving's Adam Rothwell and the Institute of Fundraising take to the airwaves.

Hey preacher, leave those atheists alone!

With so many reasons for commuters of any religious persuasion to feel uncomfortable about travelling on public transport, surely the fact that a poster suggesting that there is ‘probably no God’ and to ‘enjoy your life’ is in close vicinity is fairly far down the list.

It's all nice of them to offer volunteering opportunities, but charity shops need to be honest about pushing employment out of high streets.

Should an author's gender engender suspicion?

I received an email yesterday from a chief executive of a charity in Sheffield, who happens to be a woman. I only highlight this fact because her point was that all the contributors for January’s issue of PF were men.

A giving campaign? What a good idea!

Happy new year! Did you have a good Christmas? Eat lots of turkey? Celebrate with a luxury or two? Good on you, it can’t be all doom and gloom. But those early December paydays make January a long and difficult month, so I’m sure you will have (in some way) reviewed youar finances to see if you are making the most of your money.

Snap happy!

I knew fundraisers were a keen bunch, but the speed of entries to our photo competition has really impressed me. As part of our PF team resolution to become more interactive in 2009 we have launched a photo competition. The comp features in the new issue of the magazine (OUT TODAY!) and news of its existence went out on Charity News Alert yesterday afternoon - and already we have three entrants!
