Samaritans restructures retail operation

Samaritans is restructuring its retail operations, in a move to run more of its charity shops centrally.

Up until now, the charity’s more-than-200 regional branches have been responsible for running the Samaritans shops in their area - although not all branches have shops; the Samaritans is understood to only have around 30 shops at present.

While this is an unusual approach within the sector, some other charities such as the RSPCA have a similar structure.

But the charity has said it is changing its approach, with its central office taking responsibility for the strategy of some of its shops.

A spokeswoman for the charity said: “We are indeed looking at new strategies around our shops, especially as we now have some that will be run centrally, having previously been run by branches, while others continue to be operated independently by our affiliate branches.”
