Charities are being urged to abandon balloon releases in a Twitter a campaign.
The total value of charitable tax reliefs provided by HMRC rose to £3.34bn in 2010-11, according to latest figures.
The department confirmed last week that the value of reliefs to charities and donors had increased for the 7th consecutive year, up by 3.7 per cent on the 2009-10 figure of £3.22bn.
The 2010-11 figure is made up of £2.56bn of reliefs to charities and £0.78bn to individuals.
Of the charity repayments, £1.10bn was in ‘tax repayments’, a figure which includes gift aid, while there was £1.16bn in business rates relief payments.
Payroll giving payments by HMRC remained static at just £30m, the same amount as the previous three years.
