Charities currently face the threat of extra bureaucracy following last year’s Sorp revision, the increased regulatory burden associated with SIR and the upcoming Charities Bill. Alex Hardie reports.

Auditors have had to demonstrate that they are fully up-to-date, informed and proving that they have the know-how to use their knowledge. Luckily, many have kept abreast of the changes and have the resources to advise their clients efficiently and knowledgeably.

Tree Aid found that an auditor, well-poised with up-to-date information and knowledge of large and small charities, was invaluable. It chose Sayer Vincent and finance and support services manager, Allister Young says: ‘Sayer Vincent helped to create an excellent set of accounts giving advice on presentation to new regulations. Its understanding of the sector from its worldwide charity experience adds value to the charity.’

Also of interest this month is the appearance of Beatbullying, winner of the overall award for excellence at the Charity Awards 2005. Just six months after the win it appointed Trustient as auditors. The appointment was based on the company’s knowledge, but also evidence of its commitment to the charity sector.

The relationship developed at the Charity Awards where Trustient sponsored the children and youth category which Beatbullying also won. During several discourses on the evening, the relationship first blossomed. Chief executive, Emma-Jane Cross, says: ‘Trustient was personable, gave excellent advice and by sponsoring a category at the Awards, showed a strong commitment to the sector.’
