Charities in Twitter storm over balloon releases

Charities are being urged to abandon balloon releases in a Twitter a campaign.
The Anglo-German Foundation has said it is going to spend out its reserves and close down, though not because of the recession, but because it believes it has largely achieved its objectives.
“The founding Charter initially had a term of 12 years, which has been renewed twice since then, and will now expire in December 2009,” explained director Ray Cunningham (pictured).
“In 2004, the trustees, satisfied that the Foundation had largely fulfilled, within the limits of its resources, the objectives for which it was established, decided to devote the remaining assets to one final major project designed to set the seal on its work to date.”
The Foundation was set up in 1973 to improve mutual knowledge between the two nations and deepen their understanding of modern industrial society and its problems.
He added that the knowledge in each country about the other’s socio-economic systems were now far greater, and that co-operation in research and policy circles are “far more extensive”.
The Foundation will close on 4 December after giving more than 1,000 project grants and producing more than 600 publications.
The final research project, entitled Creating Sustainable Growth in Europe, began in 2005 and has now been completed. The findings will be published at two major policy seminars in London and Berlin within the next month.
