Charities in Twitter storm over balloon releases

Charities are being urged to abandon balloon releases in a Twitter a campaign.
The Independent Expert Group on charity expenses is seeking out people who might have a view on the subject and interviewing them in order to gauge their views.
Despite attracting over 600 responses just halfway through the consultation period, the working group chaired by former Charity Commissioner Lindsay Driscoll (pictured) is contacting certain people with “particular expertise and perspective” to invite them to be interviewed by the group’s researcher, Helen Bush.
A spokesman for the NCVO, which set up the independent group with CFDG, said that from the outset the group decided that the consultation would take three forms: to consult the sector widely; to ask for written submissions from 50 organisations, and to interview 15 people with a specific interest in the topic.
Bush told Charity News Alert that the 15 interviewees comprised the chief executives of the main umbrella bodies, a representative from the Office of the Third Sector, and professional advisers such as lawyers, accountants and auditors. “We are approaching people who have either technical expertise or a policy angle,” she said.
The vast majority of the 600 respondents to the consultation were from registered charities, she added, with a good spread across small, medium and large organisations.
