Charities in Twitter storm over balloon releases

Charities are being urged to abandon balloon releases in a Twitter a campaign.
The Shaw Trust has made its first international merger with Interwork, the largest specialist disability employment charity in South Australia. The deal will add £5m to Shaw Trust’s annual income.
It is the second merger for the Shaw Trust this year. In May, it merged with UK charity Employment Opportunities which has an annual income of around £3m.
The Shaw Trust's most recent reported annual turnover was £72.9m according to the Charity Commission's website.
Bernie Jones, international director of the Shaw Trust, told Charity News Alert that the Trust had been partners with Interwork for several years, but talks of a merger started in January of this year.
"Shaw Trust's board and executives had been interested in entering Australia for some time. There is a big opportunity for clients among the 4.5 million disabled people there.
"The merger is a good way to get into the Australian market and extend our mission, rather than setting up our own, separate organisation."
Shaw Trust also has partners in Romania and Poland. Jones said there was no current plans for mergers in these countries, but the charitable partnerships would continue.
