The British Heart Foundation walked away with the top prize at this year’s Charities’ Online Account Awards.

The annual award ceremony, sponsored by Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), saw BHF claim the prize in the top 100 charities category.

Chairman of the judging panel and PwC partner Graham Ward stressed the importance of communicating “a clear linkage between money in and money spent” as a means of demonstrating “robust financial management”.

More so than ever before, this year’s entrants seemed to focus on the importance of the internet as a communications tool. Michael Izza, chief executive of ICAEW, said the use of online communication “can really bring to life the spirit and purpose of these organisations”.

CAF chief John Low said the awards “recognise charities that bring new levels of excellence to online accounting”.

The results for this year’s awards were:

Top 100 charities
Winner: The British Heart Foundation
Runner-up: Cancer Research UK

Charities with an income over £2m
Winner: The British Library
Runner-up: The National Trust

Charities with an income between £500,000 and £2m

Winner: Charity Finance Directors’ Group
Runner-up: Hilton in the Community Foundation

Charities with an income between £100,000 and £500,000
Winner: Cecily’s Fund
Runner-up: National Association for Gifted Children

Charities with an income below £100,000

Winner: Mexborough & Swinton Astronomical Society
Runner-up: Chesterfield Philharmonic Choir
