Charities in Twitter storm over balloon releases
24 May 2012
Charities are being urged to abandon balloon releases in a Twitter a campaign.
The merger of Age Concern and Help the Aged will result in the loss of 310 posts, as the charity looks to make savings of more than £10m.
In a statement, the age charity said it expects retail and legacy income to fall and will be balancing its budget to maintain an appropriate level of reserves.
However, it emphasised that as it has 130 posts which are not currently filled, the number of compulsory redundancies is not likely to reach the 300 mark.
It will also be offering the opportunity for voluntary redundancy and reassigning staff whose roles are made redundant, while most fixed term contracts will not be renewed.
A 90-day staff consultation began yesterday. The charity currently has over 2,750 posts.
Tom Wright (pictured), chief executive of Age Concern and Help the Aged, said the charity needs to “hit the ground running on a number of different fronts to achieve our stated ambition of a world in which older people flourish”.
