Charities in Twitter storm over balloon releases

Charities are being urged to abandon balloon releases in a Twitter a campaign.
Charities Aid Foundation has made “a handful” of employees compulsorily redundant in the last few weeks and another ten have opted for voluntary severance packages.
A futher four people are “at risk” of redundancy, said CAF chief executive John Low (pictured), and he could not guarantee there wouldn’t be more.
He said the “miserable economic situation” had forced CAF to accelerate the staff restructuring programme begun as part of the new strategic plan.
CAF has £2.5bn under management, mostly in charities’ deposits held within CAF Bank, and so has been affected by the fall in the markets and interest rates.
While compulsory redundancies had been avoided as much as possible by inviting people to apply for voluntary severance packages and taking on temps instead of permanent staff to fill posts in the short-term, “around two or so” redundancies in the customer service team had been unavoidable and another four, from the marketing and private client division, may be required.
“Like lots of other organisations, we are having to make adjustments,” he said. CAF has 450 UK staff and another 100 or so around the world. The US office had also lost three people.
CAF is not unionised but Low said that when he joined, he formalised the role of the existing staff consultation group so that staff now have a more official representation role.
He said management had tried to ensure the process was “open, fair, transparent and timely”. But CAF had to ensure it was in the best possible shape to support the sector at a time of hugely increased demand for its services, he added.
