OSCR, the Scottish regulator, has removed 85 charities from the Scottish Charity Register, as it believes them to be no longer active and is pursuing a further 790 ‘defaulting’ charities that are late in filing accounts and annual returns, despite repeated reminders.
Jane Ryder, chief executive of OSCR said: "The action is part of our ongoing work in building and maintaining an accurate charity register. It is right that we act against the small number who fail to engage with the regulator."
Up to four reminder letters are issued by the regulator before a charity is listed as ‘defaulting’ on the Scottish Charity Register. The 790 defaulting charities are being instructed to provide the required information and account for charity assets.
"The 790 defaulting charities we have contacted have confirmed that the required information will now be supplied," said Ryder, "So there should be no need for further action."
