Charities in Twitter storm over balloon releases

Charities are being urged to abandon balloon releases in a Twitter a campaign.
The National Trust for Scotland is planning to make up to 91 full-time posts redundant in 2009/10 as it implements a new strategic plan to become more efficient.
In a statement the Trust said that as many of these as possible would be sought through natural wastage and a voluntary redundancy programme.
It has also put on hold the recruitment of new seasonal staff in order to reduce the overall number of seasonal hours.
As part of the plan, it anticipates that all areas of organisation will be streamlined, including changes to some of its loss-making properties.
New chief executive Kate Mavor (pictured) said the Trust has to make cost savings in response to the recession.
“Inevitably this includes reducing our staffing levels and doing everything we can to ensure the charity is more efficient if we are to have a sustainable future.
“Today’s proposed job losses are very regrettable but as staffing accounts for 50 per cent of our operating expenditure, we must inevitably face the prospect of redundancies.
“Whilst we have taken some very difficult decisions, we are convinced that this is the right thing to do to secure the long-term viability of the Trust.”
