Labour lets itself be lobbied through new campaigning website

Finance | Ian Allsop | 27 Jan 2009

The Labour Party has launched a website allowing organisations and individuals to set up campaigns they want to bring to the attention of Labour politicians.

Labourspace is a social networking site which provides a platform for third sector organisations and individuals to host and promote their campaigns.

The Labourspace.com community gets to vote on campaigns and the creators of the most popular one each quarter will have the opportunity to take their ideas to Labour Party politicians in person. The campaign will also be reported to the appropriate party policy commission.

Once an individual supports a campaign they will be given a unique recruiter code to send to their friends, post on blogs or a Facebook page to try to entice others to support their campaign. By using the ‘Tell a newspaper about this campaign' function people can write to numerous local newspaper editors.

Ed Miliband expects ‘lively forum'

Former charities minister and current secretary of state for energy and climate change, Ed Miliband (pictured), who is compiling the next Labour election manifesto, hopes that the website will help Labour build its manifesto by recognising the importance of working with campaigning organisations and individuals.

Miliband is a keen advocate of campaigning by charities, and last month called on the electorate to launch a "mass movement campaign" on climate change, similar to the Make Poverty History crusade of 2005.

Of the new website, he said: "I will be regularly checking out the site which I expect will become a lively forum for discussion and debate. I hope people will use it to let us know what their priorities are for a better, fairer Britain under Labour in the future."

The winner for each quarter will be announced on the following dates: Friday 20 March, Friday 19 June, Monday 28 September and Friday 18 December.
