Lesley-Anne Alexander, chief executive of the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB), is the new chair of Acevo.
Alexander replaces Charities Aid Foundation chief, John Low, who was chair for four years.
Alexander said: "The economic downturn has meant that the work Acevo is doing for the third sector is more crucial than ever. Charities are facing lower incomes and increased demand from beneficiaries, which brings a further, challenging dimension to the role. I look forward to embracing the opportunities Acevo's voice can bring to the sector."
Prior to RNIB, Alexander was director of operations for the Peabody Trust, one of the UK's largest housing associations and regeneration agencies. Before this she held various posts in local government, including director of housing with the London Borough of Enfield.
Stephen Bubb, chief executive of Acevo, said: "Acevo has always been known for the strength of its chairs. John has been a real powerhouse for Acevo. Lesley-Anne will take over at a difficult time for the sector as a whole, but her dynamism will be a real asset to us."
Speaking at a parliamentary reception following Acevo's AGM this week, Alexander praised Low's efforts and admitted that the current situation would be a challenge for charity chief executives, especially if trustees placed too much onus upon CEOs being responsible for the effects of the recession.
"I know we have an impact but didn't realise it extended that far," she joked.
