Age UK is proposed new legal name for merging age charities

Finance | 13 Jan 2009

Help the Aged and Age Concern have selected Age UK as the potential new legal name for their soon-to-be combined charity, and staff at Help the Aged have already changed their email addresses to firstname.surname@ageuk.org.

The charities are also using the moniker as the project name for the merger.

A footnote at the bottom of Help the Aged emails reads: ‘Age UK is the proposed legal name of the new charitable organisation being created by Age Concern England and Help the Aged.'

However, a spokesman said Age UK would "absolutely, categorically not" be the public-facing name of the new charity.

"It is purely an administrative legal name, for the signing of contracts and that sort of thing," he said. "I can give you a cast-iron guarantee that it is not to be the new public name for the new organisation."

The two charities began investigating the practicalities in moving towards a merger during 2005, and the new entity is scheduled to launch on 1 April 2009. It will be the biggest merger since the creation of Cancer Research UK in 2002.

Tom Wright (pictured), formerly chief executive of VisitBritain, joined as chief executive of the new organisation at the start of this year. He is currently splitting his time between Help the Aged and Age Concern England.

A new name will come into effect in 2010, and from 1 April until then, all correspondence from the two organisations will carry both their monikers.

I am confused. I see that the title ''Age UK' is being used now as the title of the new merged charity for Age Concern and Help the Aged. But your comment in the article states, that this is 'absolutely, categorically not going to be the public facing name' of the charity. So what is the name going to be? I see only 'Age UK' on the literature and this appears to be the final name?

Also I was told that before the merger could occur the Charity Commissioners were considering at what age the new charity should concentrate their efforts. Twas told that over 75 years of age was being discussed. There was confusion in Age Concern as they had courses designed for 50 years plus.

Can you help me and sort my confusion out?

It is the only sensible solution. It should have been done years aqo.
