Capacitybuilders to redistribute Plymouth ChangeUp funds

Finance | Tania Mason | 24 Sep 2008

Infrastructure organisations in Plymouth are vying for thousands of pounds of funding left up for grabs following the failure of Plymouth Community Partnership, the accountable body for ChangeUp in the region.

Capacitybuilders confirmed that Plymouth Community Partnership (PCP) was awarded two grants this year – a consortia development grant of £66,000 over three years and a two-year modernisation grant worth £174,648 over two years.

To date, PCP had been paid £11,000 of the first grant and £24,812 of the latter.

“All payments have ceased with immediate effect,” said a Capacitybuilders spokeswoman. “Some money has already been spent on delivery of the programmes but we will take steps to recover any grant funding that hasn’t been spent.”

She added that Capacitybuilders was now talking to a range of organisations in the area about how best to continue to support local community groups. She declined to name any that were being considered for the funding, though Plymouth Guild is reported to be in the frame.

The spokeswoman sought to defend Capacitybuilders’ decision to award funding to a charity that subsequently collapsed. “PCP was an established grant-holder, they had delivered on grants in the past and their chief executive had made an important contribution to ChangeUp in the region.
