Charities in Twitter storm over balloon releases
24 May 2012
Charities are being urged to abandon balloon releases in a Twitter a campaign.
The Charity Commission’s new online register of charities will feature a colour-coded ‘naming and shaming’ tool which will highlight charities that file their accounts late.
Charity Commission chief executive Andrew Hind told delegates at the Charity Accountants’ Conference last week that charities that filed their accounts on time would have a green border around their entry on the register, while charities that filed late would have a red border to highlight their non-compliance.
The Commission’s target is for 75 per cent of charities to file their accounts within ten months of the end of their financial year. Latest figures show that about 74 per cent of charities file their accounts on time.
The next version of the Commission’s online register will feature a much greater range of information, including the proportion of income charities spend on administration costs.
The register will also have an improved search facility.
The new register of charities is to launch on 1 October.

There are over 30,000 charities on the CC's defaulters' list, I doubt whether a little red ink will either reform the long-term non-compliers or alarm those who are just a little tardy. Surface show is no substitute for tackling the problem in an ordered and effective way.
