New body to represent deaf and disability groups in London

Finance | Gareth Jones | 30 Jul 2008

Think tank and lobbying organisation London Councils is to set up a strategic organisation to represent disability and deaf groups in the capital.

Funded by Capacitybuilders’ Improving Reach programme, the London Community Interest Company of Deaf and Disability Organisations (London CIC) will fill the hole left by the closure of Greater London Action on Disability (GLAD) in 2006.

Research commissioned by Capacitybuilders in July 2007 identified that black and minority ethnic, refugee and migrant (BAMER) disability organisations have particular support needs, and prioritised the need for the further development of support services.

In addition to Improving Reach funding, London Councils itself will make an investment of £285,000 per year during 2008-12, and has initiated collaborative working with other funders.

GLA meeting

Deaf and disability organisations gathered at the Greater London Assembly on Monday to hear about the project, which will produce a report and data source to meet the information needs of support agencies.

London Councils says it has undertaken “extensive consultation” in preparation for London CIC, while further Capacitybuilders funding has been provided to Independent Living Alternatives to conduct research into the barriers to accessing services.

Funding will also be used to build on good practice and develop tools and training for user-led deaf and disability borough organisations.
