Charities in Twitter storm over balloon releases
24 May 2012
Charities are being urged to abandon balloon releases in a Twitter a campaign.
The Charity Commision has launched a new fast track system for authorising trustee payments. Charities can now apply for permission to pay their trustees for goods and services using the process, and in most cases involving total payments of less than £1,000 a year, the Commission has waived the need for trustees to seek consent altogether, as long as they follow certain rules.
The new procedure was trialled over the summer for medium and large charities, following its introduction for small charities in 2002. It now means that where trustees can show in their application that the charity will benefit from the arrangement, the Commission can usually provide authority without further correspondence.
Head of publications and guidance, Nick Mott, said: "In our experience trustees are usually best placed to make decisions about what is best for the charity."
