Charities in Twitter storm over balloon releases
24 May 2012
Charities are being urged to abandon balloon releases in a Twitter a campaign.
The Institute of Fundraising (IoF) has called on the Home Office to provide start-up funding for the self- regulation of fundraising scheme. IoF chief executive, Lindsay Boswell said: "Self-regulation does not need the Charities Bill to happen, but it does need the funding. We've promised the sector an Autumn 2005 launch, but in order to meet this target, funding needs to be made available."
IoF has also welcomed the Home Office's consultation on the success criteria for self-regulation and published a summary the business plan and update on the selfregulation scheme online at
www.institute-of-fundraising.org.uk.
The business plan includes commendations for a number of modifications to the Steering Committee's report for the scheme, which have now been accepted within the Home Office's statement and are now open for sector consultation. It feels that the scheme should become its own legal entity, separate from IoF as soon as possible. This is likely to be around 12 months after start-up. It also recommends that the structure of the Council that governs the scheme should include a majority lay representation from the public.
