Charities in Twitter storm over balloon releases
24 May 2012
Charities are being urged to abandon balloon releases in a Twitter a campaign.
The Directory of Social Change is to ask the attorney general to intervene on the Charity Commission's recent landmark ruling that charities can now run services that governmental authority was previously legally required to provide. DSC does not accept that the charity can be independent when directly funded to run the service by the public body concerned.
In a statement DSC said that the issue is not primarily a legal one. "More important is the fact that the ruling destroys the distinction between what is charitable and what is statutory and so will diminish over time the standing and distinctiveness of 'charity' in the eyes of the public."
If and when the new Charities Bill becomes law, DSC will petition the attorney general, in his capacity as protector of charities to take these decisions to appeal at the Charities Appeal Tribunal.
